In Tibetan Buddhism, the two most important holy figures are the Dalai Lama and the Panchen Lama. Next in the hierarchy are the heads of the four sects i,e Penor Rinpoche, Kyabje Sakya Trizen, Karmapa and Ven Lobsang Nyima.

* The current and 14th Dalai Lama is the spiritual head of all the four schools or sects of Tibetan Bhuddism as well as the temporal leader of the Tibetan people.The Panchen Lama's significance is only spiritual. They have a crusial role in nomating each other's successors.

*Nyingma sect(founded in 820). Its present heads, approved by the Dalai Lama is Penor Rinpoche, whose monastery-in-exile is based at Bylakuppe in Karnataka.

*Sakya sect (founded in 1035). Its present head, Kyabje Sakya Trizin, who was designated the throne-holder by the Dalai Lama is based in Rajpur, Dehra Dun.

*Kagyu sect(founded is 1050) is headed by Karmapa Rinpoche Urgen Thinlay Dorjee was recognised by Tai Situ Rinpoche and was approved by the Dalai Lama as the 17th Karmapa. The Karmapa wears a black hat during ceremonies. Rumtek Monastery in Sikkim was the seat fo the previous Karmapa.

*Gellug sect(fouded in 1385). The Dalai Lama and the Panchen Lama belong to this sect. The Dalai Lama wears a yellow hat during ceremonies. The head of the Gelug sect is known as the Gaden Tri Rinpoche and with the Dalai Lama's blessings Ven Lobsang Nyima holds that position.

*The Lamas belonging to all these four sects wear a red lobe.
